Remaking HLSS

Postby StevenFX » Thu Jul 09, 2009 4:22 am

Hello everyone,

I've started on remaking HLSS from the ground up. As the source code is nowhere to be found, this means an entire new program will be born. I'm hoping that my attempts will fix some of the most common problems with compatibility. Remember, HLSS3.0 is code about 7 years old. I'll bet a majority of problems come from newer technologies conflicting with the outdated code of HLSS.

I was wondering if this is "okay" to do; I do not want to cause any problems, personally or legally.

With all due respect,
Steven

Yeah it's fine. The original creators are no where to be found. We just run the supporting website.

I've set up a site for it here: http://www.dev.phreakyourgeek.com/ssp/

I'm wondering how many people are interested in an update/new program. I don't want to waste time. :P

Will your player only work for Source games or all HL games like HLSS?

Technically it will work with both Source and HL as you can just set the game directory to whatever, but I just sorta stuck Source in there. >.<

I'm writing the main program in Visual Basic .NET, but some parts of it (INI parser, some core components) are C++ DLLs. I'll eventually integrate it all in to one EXE, but I need to get everything working first. >.<

Will you be willing to release it open source? That would make it easier for others to contribute and make additions. i also have a few ideas i could send your way, if interested.

Just a quick update:

I have not given up on this! I'm really sorry to everyone who e-mailed me; I don't think I responded and I feel pretty bad about just disappearing. I accidentally lost ALL my projects (web site, programs, images, etc) when I forgot to back them up and reinstalled Windows. I didn't realize what I had done until a few days after that, and I just sorta... didn't start on anything again.

I recently found myself in the mood to start again. I have finished the main UI and will most likely start on the program core tomorrow or even later tonight. Hopefully it'll be much less complicated and not a clusterf*ck of code and functions like it was before.
